Historical Notes
Chouteau's Island sat in the Arkansas River along the Santa Fe Trail southwest of Lakin. Folklore dates a cache of $24,000 in silver to 1828. River erosion consumed the island; treasure guides now place the hoard under former riverbed soils in Kearny County. Kearny County Museum documents Chouteau Island history as one of the trail's notable Arkansas River landmarks.
