Chisholm Trail Payroll — Waco Suspension Bridge

Lost Treasure TX • McLennan County County
Description
Waco's 1870 Suspension Bridge was the only Brazos crossing for the Chisholm Trail — folklore of buried cattle-drive payrolls and strongboxes lost in the riverbottom saloon district.
Historical Notes
Built in 1870 with cables supplied by John Roebling, the Waco Suspension Bridge turned the city into a major cattle-shipping hub. For two decades trail herds crossed here, and the nearby "Reservation" district became one of the wildest cattle towns in Texas. Texas trail lore often describes drovers and trail bosses burying emergency cash along river crossings when floods, raids, or gambling losses threatened their stake. Waco compilations include unrecovered payroll caches in the Brazos bottom and along the old trail approaches. The bridge and surrounding riverfront are historic landmarks. Coordinates mark the Suspension Bridge at Indian Spring Park.
