Chincoteague Bay Pirate Letter Treasure

Lost Treasure VA • Accomack / Northampton County County
Description
Eastern Shore legend of £200,000 in pirate chests buried north of Chincoteague Island — matching the 1750 intercepted letter describing three cedar markers on an ocean bluff.
Historical Notes
The 1750 letter specifies three creeks north of the second inlet above Chincoteague and a bluff with three cedar trees eleven yards apart. Ten iron-bound chests hold bars, silver, gold, diamonds, and jewels. Chincoteague and Assateague tourism blend wild-pony folklore with pirate treasure tales. Shifting inlets make modern creek identification uncertain. Washington Post lifestyle coverage in 1984 helped popularize the letter among mid-Atlantic beachcombers.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
