Chilkoot Pass Stampeder Caches

Lost Treasure AK • Skagway Borough County
Description
Chilkoot Trail legend of Klondike stampeders burying gold dust, jewelry, and payroll near the Golden Stairs and summit caches when blizzards, avalanches, or Canadian customs forced them to lighten loads.
Historical Notes
Between 1897 and 1899 tens of thousands hauled ton-weight outfits over the Chilkoot Pass from Dyea to Bennett Lake. Pack animals died, avalanches buried camps, and travelers discarded or hid valuables to survive. Regional treasure compilations repeat accounts of marked trees, stone cairns, and tin boxes along the trail never reclaimed after owners perished or gave up. The National Park Service Chilkoot Trail historic route preserves the corridor where these cache stories concentrate around the Scales and summit.
