Catholic Cross Treasure — Castle Gap

Lost Treasure TX • Upton County County
Description
Upton County legend of the Catholic Cross Treasure buried in or near Castle Gap — a separate tale from the Maximilian wagon-train gold associated with the same pass west of Fort Stockton.
Historical Notes
Castle Gap is a narrow break through the Castle Mountains used by Butterfield Overland Mail stages, cattle drives, and Apache and Comanche raiding parties. The Handbook of Texas notes at least eight distinct treasure stories tied to the gap. The Rocker Box Upton County list names the Catholic Cross Treasure as hidden in or near Castle Gap, distinct from the Maximilian, Coronado, and stage-payroll variants. Related entry: "Castle Gap Treasure (Maximilian's Gold)" in the statewide legendary import. Coordinates mark Castle Gap pass between Crane and McCamey in Upton County, roughly 45 miles northwest of Fort Stockton.
