Castell General Store Post Office 1872 Ranch Payroll — Llano County

Lost Treasure TX • Llano County County
Description
Castell legend of a ranch payroll cached at the 1872 south-bank post office and general store — when the community center shifted across the Llano River from the original Adelsverein townsite.
Historical Notes
A post office was established on the south side of the Llano River in 1872, and Castell has been centered there ever since while remaining the oldest surviving settlement in Llano County. By 1972 the ranching and recreational community reported seventy-two residents, mostly descendants of original German settlers. General-store and ranch-payroll folklore places strongboxes along the upper Llano where weekly wages moved as cash through remote trade posts serving the Mason–Fredericksburg wagon corridor. The Castell store and schoolhouse remain landmarks on Farm Road 2768. Coordinates approximate the Castell general-store and post-office district on the south bank of the Llano River.
