Casa Blanca White House Tunnel Cache — Jim Wells County

Lost Treasure TX • Jim Wells County County
Description
Casa Blanca legend of valuables hidden along the tunnel that ran from the courtyard well of the colonial White House — the caliche-block stronghold on Peñitas Creek used as mission and ranch headquarters.
Historical Notes
The Casa Blanca White House was built of caliche blocks (*ciares*) in a square with a central courtyard; the courtyard well also served as the entrance to a tunnel leading out of the building. Toward the end of the eighteenth century the structure was used as a mission before the Garza Montemayor family used it as a ranchhouse. Spanish and Mexican ranch headquarters in South Texas often generated folklore of specie, church plate, or family fortunes concealed in tunnels when outlaws or hostile Indians threatened isolated settlements. By 1945 only ruins remained at Casa Blanca. Coordinates mark the Casa Blanca historic site in Jim Wells County northeast of Alice.
