Casa Blanca Mission Treasures Cave — Jim Wells County

Lost Treasure TX • Jim Wells County County
Description
Casa Blanca legend of a cache of mission treasures hidden in a cave near the colonial White House settlement northeast of Alice on Peñitas Creek.
Historical Notes
The Rocker Box Jim Wells County compilation states that a cache of mission treasures is supposedly hidden in a cave near Casa Blanca. Casa Blanca was established around 1754 when Tomás Sánchez selected a site on Peñitas Creek; the caliche-block White House later served as a mission and ranch headquarters on the Spanish land grant to the Garza Montemayor family. Local legend holds that outlaws drove the Montemayor heirs from the ranch before hostile Indians scattered later occupants. Mission-era treasure caves are a recurring theme in South Texas guidebooks citing W. C. Jameson's Guide to Treasure in Texas. Coordinates mark Casa Blanca in extreme northeastern Jim Wells County, two miles southwest of Sandia and twenty miles northeast of Alice.
