Carrizozo Santa Fe Railroad Payroll — Lincoln County

Lost Treasure NM • Lincoln County County
Description
Carrizozo legend of a Santa Fe Railway payroll strongbox from the era when the railroad made the town Lincoln County seat — bypassing the old Lincoln County War capital.
Historical Notes
Carrizozo became the Lincoln County seat in 1909 after the El Paso and Northeastern Railway (later Santa Fe) transformed the prairie division point. The railroad shift drained historic Lincoln and White Oaks of their commercial dominance. Rail-payroll folklore mirrors Roswell and Clovis variants on the southeastern New Mexico lines. Carrizozo sits on the route between Alamogordo and the Pecos Valley. Coordinates mark downtown Carrizozo in Lincoln County northwest of Roswell.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
