Carlton Chisholm Trail Cattle Payroll — Hamilton County

Lost Treasure TX • Hamilton County County
Description
Carlton legend of a Chisholm Trail cattle-payroll cache — on the branch driven between Hico and Carlton when Hamilton County ranchers sent herds to northern markets.
Historical Notes
Between 1870 and 1880 thousands of settlers moved into Hamilton County as ranchers drove cattle to market on a branch of the Chisholm Trail that ran between Hico and Carlton. Open-range cattle and sheep ranching dominated the county before cotton farming expanded after 1880. Trail-payroll and trail-boss strongbox tales cluster wherever Texas herds joined northbound cattle roads. Carlton lies on the northeastern Hamilton County prairie between Hico and the Comanche County line. Coordinates mark Carlton in northeastern Hamilton County on Farm Road 1247.
