Historical Notes
Carlsbad developed as the Eddy County seat on the Pecos River south of Roswell, gateway to the Guadalupe Mountains and the Permian Basin oil country. Stage and freight lines connected the town to Fort Stockton, Roswell, and the Texas line. Stage-payroll and cattle-shipping strongbox tales cluster along the lower Pecos between Chaves and Eddy counties. Carlsbad Caverns National Park lies in the Guadalupe range west of town. Coordinates mark downtown Carlsbad in Eddy County south of Roswell.
