Captiva Island Pirate Cache

Lost Treasure FL • Lee County County
Description
Captiva Island legend of Gasparilla's captive isle — where pirates allegedly stashed chests and where Black Caesar abandoned loot when driven from Sanibel.
Historical Notes
Captiva's name is traditionally linked to Gasparilla holding female prisoners on the "Isle de los Captivas." The island sits in the Buccaneer Coast archipelago whose east-west orientation sheltered pirate craft. When Gaspar raided Black Caesar's Sanibel camp in 1817, Caesar fled east abandoning treasure. Legends merge both pirates' hoards into Captiva and Pine Island Sound folklore. Modern shellers and boaters still repeat tales of coins in mangrove roots along Captiva's north end.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
