Captain Kidd Charles Island Milford

Lost Treasure CT • New Haven County County
Description
Milford legend of Captain Kidd burying treasure on Charles Island and placing a curse on anyone who disturbed the hoard — Connecticut's best-known island pirate cache.
Historical Notes
Charles Island lies off Silver Sands State Park in Milford and is reachable by tombolo at low tide. A History of the Colony of New Haven account from 1838 describes diggers striking an iron box before a headless apparition and smoke drove them away. The island's thrice-cursed folklore also includes Aztec treasure legends separate from the Kidd tradition.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
