Captain Fisk Deep Creek Gold Hill

Lost Treasure ND • Bowman County County
Description
1864 Fisk emigrant train legend that promoter Captain James L. Fisk discovered a hill of gold along Deep Creek in present Bowman County while escorting wagons toward Montana — a claim that predates Doctor Dibb's lost-mine saga.
Historical Notes
Fisk's September 1864 report describes a Sitting Bull attack, thunderstorm, and wolf-haunted camp after the expedition strayed from General Sully's safer route. Regional histories repeat Fisk's gold-hill statement without documenting a sustained rush, leaving the strike as frontier promotion or buried ore legend. Coordinates mark Deep Creek country south of Scranton in the same southwest corner tied to Haley and Doctor Dibb tales.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
