Description
1779 Kauai legend that after Captain James Cook's death at Kealakekua, Hawaiians on Kauai buried European weapons, tools, and ship goods believed to hold dangerous mana — a stash never recovered according to treasure lore.
Historical Notes
Cook's third voyage brought unprecedented iron, firearms, and trade goods into Hawaiian society; oral tradition on Kauai holds that some items were ritually buried as tabu objects. Popular treasure lists extend the 1779 Kealakekua killing narrative to an unlocated Kauai cache of "magic" European goods. Waimea and the Cook Landing Site country anchor the legend geographically on Kauai's west shore.
