Folklore of a vast Aztec treasure — gold bars and rich ore worth millions — hidden in a cave or cavern in the Capitan Mountains of south-central New Mexico.
Historical Notes
The Capitan Mountains rise near Capitan, Lincoln County — famous as the birthplace of Smokey Bear. Treasure legend describes Aztec wealth concealed in a mountain cave. The range is largely Lincoln National Forest. No verified discovery has been documented.
