Camp Ford Confederate Specie Cache — Smith County

Lost Treasure TX • Smith County County
Description
Tyler legend of Confederate specie or officer valuables buried near Camp Ford — the largest Trans-Mississippi Civil War prison camp east of the Mississippi.
Historical Notes
Camp Ford operated northeast of Tyler from 1863 until the war's end, holding thousands of Union prisoners. Confederate prison camps across the South generated folklore of pay chests and personal valuables buried when commanders feared Union raids or collapse of the eastern lines. The Camp Ford stockade and walking trails are preserved by the Smith County Historical Society. Treasure tales describe strongboxes hidden in the pine woods between the prison compound and the Tyler courthouse district. Coordinates approximate the Camp Ford historic site northeast of Tyler in Smith County.
