California Gold Rush Caravan Cache — Eagle Pass

Lost Treasure TX • Maverick County County
Description
Eagle Pass legend of gold-rush caravan specie cached at California Camp — when Natchez, Defiance, and Mississippi Mining companies crossed the Rio Grande at Fort Duncan bound for California.
Historical Notes
Shortly after Fort Duncan was established in 1849, caravans of California gold seekers traveled through Eagle Pass via the Mexico route. Companies included the Natchez California Company, the Defiance Gold Hunters, and the Mississippi Mining and Trading Company. Henry Matson opened the first saloon at the growing settlement called California Camp near the fort. Legends of America notes prospectors streaming through Eagle Pass on the California Road. Frontier folklore imagines travelers burying funds before river crossings or Indian raids. Coordinates mark the Fort Duncan / California Camp reach on the Rio Grande at Eagle Pass. Related entry "Eagle Pass Camino Real Pack Train Silver" documents earlier Spanish-era trade traditions on the same crossing.
