Description
Legend of gold bars, silver, and jewels buried by a spring under large rocks in Caballo Canyon of the Caballo Mountains, stolen from Spanish traders during Apache uprisings.
Historical Notes
The Caballo (Horse) Mountains lie about 35 miles north of Las Cruces. Folklore says Apache raiders hid plunder from Chihuahua-Spanish caravans in Caballo Canyon, under big rocks near a spring. The range borders Caballo Lake and the Rio Grande. Much land is private or BLM — obtain permission before searching.
