Just to the Northern Outside Boundary of the County in Monterey County and to the Eastern Boundary of San Luis meets the Kings & Kern County line, Nuggets have been found on Private Cattle Ranches for years. On JACK RANCH, now owned by the Hearst Corp., there is a butte behind the Headquarters, known as Gold Hill, for good reason. The Mission Padres of San Miguel Mission (7 miles north of Paso Robles) and Mission Indians mined gold there around 1805. Gold has been found North of there in the Castle Mountains, also known to the locals as Kings Peak.
