Burnet Fort Croghan Frontier Specie Cache — Burnet County

Lost Treasure TX • Burnet County County
Description
Burnet legend of frontier specie buried near Fort Croghan — the 1849 dragoon post that became the Burnet County seat on the Colorado River.
Historical Notes
Fort Croghan was established in 1848–1849 three miles south of present Burnet after Samuel E. Holland protested construction on his land. The post guarded the frontier until abandonment in December 1853; Peter Kerr donated 100 acres for the county seat named Hamilton, later renamed Burnet. Frontier garrison folklore often places buried pay chests when troops withdraw from remote Hill Country posts. Fort Croghan is preserved as a Burnet County historic site and museum. Coordinates approximate Fort Croghan and downtown Burnet, the Burnet County seat northwest of Marble Falls.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
