Burnet Common School District — Burnet County

Historic School TX • Burnet County County
Description
Burnet county-seat schools; district system established in the 1890s after decades of shade-tree and log-cabin classrooms near Fort Croghan.
Historical Notes
Early education in Burnet County was hampered by Indian attacks; classes were sometimes held under shade trees with older boys keeping rifles ready. Small community schools at Hairston Creek, Pool Branch, Hoover's Valley, and Oatmeal gave way to a district system in the 1890s. By 1960 nearly 18 percent of county residents over twenty-five were high school graduates; by 1980 more than 60 percent.
