Buffalo Bayou Merchant Strongbox — Houston

Lost Treasure TX • Harris County County
Description
Downtown Houston legend of nineteenth-century merchants and cotton factors burying strongboxes along Buffalo Bayou — from Allen's Landing through the Warehouse District before repeated floods and channelization.
Historical Notes
Allen's Landing at the foot of Main Street marks Houston's 1836 founding on Buffalo Bayou. Antebellum Houston moved cotton, sugar, and specie along the bayou to Galveston; merchants often distrusted banks and hid emergency reserves. Buffalo Bayou flooded regularly before the Allen brothers' townsite was fully raised. Treasure tradition describes boxes buried in bayou banks, wharf pilings, and alluvial terraces later paved over by downtown growth. Archaeological digs along the bayou have found bottles and trade goods but no bullion hoards. Coordinates mark Allen's Landing and the downtown bayou front.
