Buda Mountain City Stage Robbery Loot

Lost Treasure TX • Hays County County
Description
Buda legend of stage and freight robbery loot buried near Mountain City — the historic name for the Onion Creek community north of San Marcos on the Austin–San Antonio road.
Historical Notes
Buda was originally called Mountain City when the International–Great Northern arrived in 1881. The town sat on Onion Creek along the main wagon and stage route between Austin and San Marcos. Central Texas stage-road folklore describes strongboxes buried when holdups forced drivers to lighten loads before crossing creek bottoms. Rapid suburban growth has altered much of the historic landscape since the 1800s. Coordinates mark Buda in northern Hays County on the I-35 corridor.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
