Brownsville St. Louis Brownsville and Mexico Railway Payroll — Cameron County

Lost Treasure TX • Cameron County County
Description
Brownsville legend of a St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railroad payroll strongbox from the era when Brownsville became the Cameron County rail terminus on the Gulf.
Historical Notes
Brownsville was founded in 1848 and grew into the principal lower Rio Grande port. The St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway linked the city to the interior, concentrating weekly payrolls in cash before modern banking spread through the Valley. Rail-junction treasure folklore mirrors Laredo and Corpus Christi border traditions. Downtown Brownsville preserves nineteenth-century commercial architecture along the river and rail corridors. Coordinates mark downtown Brownsville at the historic railroad corridor in Cameron County.
