Description
Brownsville legend of Confederate cotton-trade specie buried near Fort Brown during the Civil War when the Rio Grande city became a blockade-running gateway to Matamoros.
Historical Notes
Fort Brown was established in 1846 after the battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma. During the Civil War, Brownsville and Matamoros formed a major cotton-export corridor past the Union blockade, concentrating enormous cash flows. Garrison and merchant folklore describes specie buried when Union forces threatened the lower Rio Grande. Texas Southmost College occupies the historic fort site on the Brownsville riverfront.
