Brownsville Channel Stolen Loot Caches — Cameron County

Lost Treasure TX • Cameron County County
Description
Brownsville legend of numerous caches of stolen loot buried near the Brownsville Ship Channel — the deepwater inlet connecting the Rio Grande city to the Gulf.
Historical Notes
The Brownsville Ship Channel was dredged to give Brownsville a deepwater port on the Gulf of Mexico. Border smuggling, Civil War blockade-running, and twentieth-century banditry fed folklore of loot buried along the channel banks. The Rocker Box Cameron County page describes numerous caches of stolen loot buried near the Brownsville Channel. The Port of Brownsville remains one of Texas's largest export harbors. Coordinates approximate the Brownsville Ship Channel entrance east of downtown Brownsville.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
