Brownfield Sand Hills Wagon Train Loot — Terry County

Lost Treasure TX • Terry County County
Description
Terry County legend of valuables from a raided wagon train buried in the sand hills south of Brownfield — the Terry County seat on the southern Llano Estacado.
Historical Notes
Terry County organized in 1904 with Brownfield as county seat amid dune and sand-hill country on the southern High Plains. Wagon-train massacre and buried-valuables tales appear throughout West Texas dune fields (see Midland-area Monahans Sandhills entries to the south). Comanche and outlaw raids on freight wagons crossing the estacado fed decades of cache folklore. Terry County's sandy soils later made it a major peanut and cotton producer southwest of Lubbock. Coordinates mark Brownfield in central Terry County southwest of Lubbock.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
