Brother Jonathan Army Payroll Wreck

Lost Treasure WA • Jefferson County County
Description
1865 Pacific Northwest legend of the steamship Brother Jonathan sinking off Crescent City with Victor Smith aboard — carrying roughly $200,000 in army payroll and Wells Fargo gold for Fort Vancouver and Walla Walla posts.
Historical Notes
Customs agent Victor Smith transferred to the Brother Jonathan in July 1865 with funds for northwest military posts and Indian treaty payments. The ship wrecked in heavy seas near Crescent City with only nineteen survivors of 244 aboard; bodies washed ashore for weeks but the gold was never found. The tale is the third Victor Smith treasure linked to Roncador Reef payroll loss and Port Angeles flood loot in Washington folklore.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
