Bronco Bill Walters Lost Loot

Lost Treasure NM • Cibola County County
Description
Cache from Wells Fargo train and stage robberies by "Bronco Bill" Walters (1894–1897), allegedly hidden near the gang's Grants-area hideout. Wells Fargo never recovered the loot.
Historical Notes
William E. "Bronco Bill" Walters robbed Wells Fargo shipments across the Southwest with his gang. Legend says he hid stolen cash near the gang hideout; amounts in retellings are often exaggerated. After a failed July 1898 robbery at Grants, lawmen Jeff Milton and George Scarborough wounded and captured Walters. He served life in prison until 1917, then worked as a wrangler in Hachita, NM until his death in 1921. Some versions place the cache near Solomonville, Arizona rather than Grants. Coordinates mark the Grants / malpais region of Cibola County.
