Bowbells Goodspeed Hudson's Bay Booty

Lost Treasure ND • Burke County County
Description
Late-1800s Missouri River legend of English outlaw Goodspeed robbing a Hudson's Bay Company paymaster of about $40,000 near Big Butte south of Bowbells — a fur-vest map fueled 1908 shovel-wielding treasure hunts.
Historical Notes
Goodspeed, a disgraced Hudson's Bay clerk, was chased along the Missouri bottomlands for six days before ranchers apprehended him near Williston country. Treasure lore says he hid the payroll before capture; searchers later found a plat etched inside his fur vest and engraved stones dated 1877 near Big Butte. A skeptical 1908 White Earth rancher insisted two bandits mugged Goodspeed and that Sibley expedition soldiers carved the arrow stones, not a treasure map.
