Bonanza Mine — Hudspeth County

Gold Mining Site TX • Hudspeth County County
Description
The Bonanza Mine in the Hudspeth County Quitman Mountains produced lead and zinc with silver and gold byproduct — Texas's principal zinc source alongside the Alice Ray Mine.
Historical Notes
TSHA reports practically all of Texas's historic zinc production and an equivalent amount of lead came from the Bonanza and Alice Ray mines in Hudspeth County from ores with small silver content. Gold occurs as minor byproduct in the same deposits. Between 1885 and 1952 total Texas lead production was 5,443 short tons and zinc 837 short tons — modest by western standards but concentrated in this remote range southwest of Sierra Blanca. Lead and zinc smelting tied to El Paso County refineries until the mid-1980s, linking Hudspeth ore to the border metro economy. Coordinates approximate the Bonanza Mine in the Quitman Mountains of Hudspeth County.
