One of the best-preserved Gold Rush ghost towns in the United States. Founded 1859 after gold discovery; peaked in late 1870s with ~10,000 residents and produced over $35 million in gold and silver.
Historical Notes
California State Historic Park. Buildings left in 'arrested decay.' Designated California's official Gold Rush Ghost Town. Remote high-desert location helped preserve it.
