Blanco High School Masonic University Foundation Cache — Blanco County

Lost Treasure TX • Blanco County County
Description
Blanco legend of specie buried in the unused Blanco Masonic University foundation — the 1874 charter whose stones later became Blanco High School in 1884.
Historical Notes
In 1874 Blanco Masons chartered Blanco Masonic University and laid a foundation, but building stopped when funds ran out. In 1884 citizens formed a joint stock company, built Blanco High School on the unused university foundation, and graduated the first class in 1887. Masonic and school-foundation folklore sometimes imagines subscription specie or building funds cached when projects stalled on the frontier. The old union church built in 1871 at a cost of $1,300 long served as the center of town life for churches, school, and community meetings. Coordinates approximate downtown Blanco near the historic school and courthouse district on US Highway 281.
