Blanco County Union Loyalist Pedernales Cache — Blanco County

Lost Treasure TX • Blanco County County
Description
Blanco County legend of a Union-loyalist strongbox along the Pedernales River — when the county voted down secession 170 to 86 in 1861.
Historical Notes
Blanco County residents voted against secession 170 to 86 in 1861, though immigrants from Northern states and Europe helped sway opinion toward the Union. The Civil War devastated the county economy; cattle fell from more than 30,000 head in 1860 to about 8,755 by 1870. Hill Country Union-loyalist folklore sometimes places buried specie when pro-Union settlers hid valuables during Confederate martial law. Related Kendall County entry documents separate Comfort Nueces Fight variants southeast of Johnson City. Coordinates approximate the Pedernales River corridor near Johnson City in central Blanco County.
