Blackbeard Teach's Hole — Ocracoke Island

Lost Treasure NC • Hyde County County
Description
Ocracoke Inlet legend of Edward "Blackbeard" Teach burying plunder on his favorite hideout island — site of his November 22, 1718 death at Teach's Hole off Springer's Point.
Historical Notes
From 1717 to 1718 Blackbeard used Ocracoke Inlet as his operational headquarters. Pamlico Sound's shallow waters let pirates hide behind the barrier island and strike merchant traffic. USC folklore and Visit Ocracoke tradition hold that Blackbeard buried gold while negotiating Charleston's medicine-chest ransom. Lieutenant Robert Maynard killed Teach at dawn in Teach's Hole; Maynard found supplies but no treasure chests. Springer's Point preserve and Teach's Hole Channel keep metal-detecting and diving lore alive on the Outer Banks.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
