Blackbeard Lynnhaven Pleasure House Raid

Lost Treasure VA • Virginia Beach County
Description
Lynnhaven River legend of Blackbeard ambushing a treasure-laden merchant ship from the Pleasure House drinking rendezvous — heavy boxes slowed the victim before the pirate buried gold and escaped up the bay.
Historical Notes
Colonial Pleasure House taverns along the Lynnhaven were pirate gathering spots. Virginia Beach CVB folklore describes a signal from the house triggering chase of a slow merchantman laden with valuables. Interrupted by approaching men-of-war, Teach allegedly buried the prize near modern Virginia Beach before fleeing to Ocracoke. The Virginian-Pilot notes impracticality of a crew-known cache on Lake Joyce islands. The tale ties Chesapeake commerce to Outer Banks piracy at the end of the Golden Age.
