Blackbeard Island Pirate Loot

Lost Treasure GA • McIntosh County County
Description
McIntosh County barrier-island legend that pirate Edward "Blackbeard" Teach buried plunder on Blackbeard Island northeast of Sapelo — a name on maps since 1760 though no cache has been found.
Historical Notes
Blackbeard Island appears as such on William DeBrahm and Henry Yonge's 1760 survey. Edward Teach preyed on merchant shipping along the Georgia and Carolina coast in the early 1700s. Tidewater creeks and marsh islands gave pirates cover for smuggling and raids. The New Georgia Encyclopedia notes the burial legend has persisted for generations despite no authenticated discovery. President Woodrow Wilson designated the island a wildlife preserve in 1914; today Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
