Blackbeard Charleston Harbor Blockade Gold

Lost Treasure SC • Charleston County County
Description
Charleston Harbor legend of Blackbeard's 1718 flotilla seizing merchant gold and silver — part of the Golden Age blockade that emptied hostages' pockets before the pirate fleet vanished north.
Historical Notes
In May 1718 Blackbeard stationed ships outside Charleston, the busiest southern colonial port. One prize alone carried over £6,000 in gold; slaves and cargo from multiple vessels swelled the haul. Lieutenant Richards delivered an ultimatum to Governor Robert Johnson: fill Blackbeard's medicine chest or hostages die. Charleston complied with £300–£400 in drugs, but pirates stripped prisoners before release. Stede Bonnet later paid dearly for operating in the same waters — Charleston sent Colonel William Rhett to hunt pirates after the humiliation.
