Description
Legend that outlaw Black Jack Ketchum buried loot from an 1884 Nogales bank robbery in a Chiricahua Mountains cave called "Room Forty-Four" near Portal, southwest of the range.
Historical Notes
Wild Cat Canyon at the south end of the Chiricahua Mountains, about eight miles southwest of Portal, contains a cave known as Room Forty-Four. Folklore attributes a cache from Black Jack Ketchum's 1884 Nogales bank robbery. Portal and the Chiricahua National Monument area are remote sky-island country on the Arizona–New Mexico border.
