Black Bart Wells Fargo Loot — Calaveras County

Lost Treasure CA • Calaveras County County
Description
Po-8 stagecoach bandit legend of Charles Boles ("Black Bart") burying Wells Fargo strongbox loot from Sierra foothill robberies between 1875 and 1883 — polite holdups from Calaveras to Sonoma.
Historical Notes
Black Bart robbed nearly thirty Wells Fargo stages without firing a shot, leaving poetic messages at several holdup sites across northern California. Though Bart was captured in San Francisco in 1883 and served time at San Quentin, folklore claims he cached portions of his haul in the Angels Camp–Calaveras corridor where many robberies occurred. Historians note Bart likely spent his take quickly; cache stories are legend extensions of California's most famous stage bandit rather than documented deposits.
