Big Sandy River Spanish Gold Cannon

Lost Treasure TX • Lavaca County County
Description
Lavaca County legend of a cannon filled with Spanish gold buried on the Big Sandy River — a tributary of the Lavaca in the Hallettsville countryside.
Historical Notes
The Big Sandy River flows through Lavaca County into the Lavaca basin. The Rocker Box Lavaca County list describes a cannon packed with Spanish gold buried along the stream — a variant of "treasure in cannon" folklore common on the Gulf Coast. Spanish and Mexican-era traffic crossed Lavaca County on routes between Victoria, Gonzales, and the coast. No authenticated cannon hoard has been recovered. Coordinates approximate the Big Sandy River in northern Lavaca County.
