Big Butte Engraved Stone Treasure Markers

Lost Treasure ND • Burke County County
Description
Big Butte landmark legend of arrow-carved boulders and an 1877-dated stone believed to mark Goodspeed's hidden Hudson's Bay payroll twelve miles south of Bowbells.
Historical Notes
1908 Bowbells treasure hunters treated the stones as signposts after the Goodspeed robbery revival near Big Butte. Skeptics attributed the carvings to General Sibley expedition soldiers who inscribed names and dates on boulders across the Missouri Plateau. Coordinates center on Big Butte as the focal point of northwest North Dakota payroll-cache folklore.
