Bettina Commune School — Llano County

Historic School TX • Llano County County
Description
Educational commune at Bettina (1847 Adelsverein freethinker settlement); state historical marker near Castell commemorates the short-lived utopian colony.
Historical Notes
Bettina was the seventh and last Adelsverein colony in Texas, settled in 1847 by German communitarian freethinkers on the north bank of the Llano across from Castell. The thatched common house and adobe structures housed a cooperative school-work community. The utopia lasted less than a year, but members including Ferdinand von Herff, Gustav Schleicher, and Jacob Kuechler became major Texas figures. A 1964 state marker commemorates Bettina, Castell, and Leiningen.
