Santa Fe Trail landmark where folklore holds that much treasure was buried in and around the historic adobe trading post near La Junta.
Historical Notes
Bent's Old Fort on the Santa Fe Trail near La Junta was a major 1830s–40s trading post on the Arkansas River. Legends of America lists the site as a reputed location for buried treasure in Otero County. The fort saw heavy fur, trade, and military traffic; caches of coins and goods are a staple of Santa Fe Trail folklore. The reconstructed fort is a National Historic Site.
