Ben Ficklin Stage Strongbox — Tom Green County

Lost Treasure TX • Tom Green County County
Description
Ben Ficklin — Tom Green County seat before the 1882 flood — folklore of unrecovered stage and freight loot buried in the South Concho bottoms before the town was abandoned.
Historical Notes
Ben Ficklin was the original county seat of Tom Green County and a Butterfield Overland Mail stop on the South Concho River. A devastating flood on August 24, 1882, destroyed the town; the county seat moved to San Angelo. Ghost-town treasure lore often describes strongboxes buried when county seats relocated suddenly or when floods scattered buildings. Ben Ficklin Cemetery and a Texas historical marker preserve the site south of San Angelo. Coordinates approximate the Ben Ficklin historic site on the South Concho. Private property — historical legend only.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
