Historical Notes
Belton was established as the Bell County seat in 1852 on Nolan Creek. The town served farmers and cattlemen between the Brazos and Colorado river basins before Temple eclipsed it as a rail hub. Regional outlaw and Reconstruction treasure tales describe payroll caches hidden along Nolan Creek and near the old stage routes that converged on the county courthouse. Belton's historic gin district along Nolan Creek preserves 19th-century commercial buildings. Coordinates approximate downtown Belton on Nolan Creek, a few miles southwest of Temple.
