Description
Bedford Academy at Oxford in the mid-1850s; drew students from across southern Llano County before the town's 1880 railroad-era revival.
Historical Notes
Oxford on State Highway 16 was first settled in the mid-1850s and was home to the Bedford Academy, which received students from throughout the county. Johnson named the community in 1880; a post office operated until 1924. The town was sometimes called "Cat Town" after a dance-hall anecdote from the 1880s.
