Beaumont Spindletop Oil Boom Payroll — Jefferson County

Lost Treasure TX • Jefferson County County
Description
Beaumont legend of an oil-boom payroll or lease bonus cache from the 1901 Spindletop gusher — the discovery that made Beaumont the first great Texas oil city.
Historical Notes
On January 10, 1901, the Lucas gusher at Spindletop Hill blew in near Beaumont, launching the modern petroleum industry. Roughnecks, lease brokers, and wildcatters handled enormous weekly cash payrolls before branch banking caught up with the boom. Oil-field treasure tales describe foremen burying strongboxes when boomtown fires, floods, or crime threatened camp settlements. The Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown Museum preserves the discovery site south of Beaumont. Coordinates mark the Spindletop historic site in southern Jefferson County.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
