Barker-Karpis Gang Lake Catherine Hideout

Lost Treasure AR • Hot Spring County County
Description
1930s outlaw hideout lore on Lake Catherine and Lake Hamilton — Barker-Karpis gang cash and loot supposedly buried near Hot Springs before the Ma Barker manhunt scattered the gang.
Historical Notes
Fred Barker, Arthur "Doc" Barker, and Alvin Karpis used the Hot Springs–Lake Catherine resort lakes as a quiet refuge between Midwest bank jobs and kidnappings. FBI pressure in the mid-1930s drove the gang from the area. Popular accounts speculate that portable wealth was buried in shoreline cabins, pine woods, and abandoned quarries between Lake Catherine and Lake Hamilton rather than carried on risky roads. No FBI file confirms a Barker cache in Arkansas, but the lakes remain staple entries in Arkansas outlaw-treasure compilations.
